This was intended to be the first of a series of ten portraits on paper in which I could explore faces from an abstract perspective, focusing on color and playing with different marks. I wanted to feel very free, that's why I chose paper. It seems to be less serious if you get it wrong, because the psychological approach is born from the experimental nature of the sketch. That's why I titled it Study, and that's how the following nine would be called. But don't get me wrong; the paper is top quality, made and prepared especially for oil painting, and textured like canvas.
 
In the end I did not continue the series. The end result of this exploration was so good, it earned its place as a unique artwork. Perhaps I will take it up again in the future. Or not.
