La noche que esperábamos (The night we waited for) can refer to two different scenarios. On the one hand, it can speak to us of a single moment in which we do nothing but wait—without expectations, in harmony with time and space—and of what might happen in the universe when we simply let ourselves be carried along by its plans.
On the other hand, it can tell us the story of that unique moment when what we had spent so long searching for finally arrives.
When the work was part of the exhibition “Un alto en el camino” in 2026, one of the visitors shared his perspective with me. For him, the scene represented destruction, in a symbolic sense (the kind of destruction that actually tears down old worlds that no longer function). However, not all of us react the same way to these changes. The male figure in the painting represented, for him, fear, uncertainty, and despair in the face of the collapse of the reality we know. The female figure, however, is the embodiment of acceptance, a serene surrender to whatever may come.
I found this to be a very interesting interpretation that led me to one of my favorite reflections: how, in every work, in every image you paint, each person finds their own stories. That is the magic.
